What is Forex?

forex-trading-my-maa-markets

Forex, short for “foreign exchange,” is the global market where currencies are traded. It’s one of the largest and most liquid financial markets in the world, with a daily trading volume exceeding $6 trillion. In forex, traders buy and sell currency pairs, speculating on the value of one currency relative to another.

Currencies are traded in pairs (like EUR/USD, USD/JPY), and the market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week. Factors like interest rates, economic indicators, political events, and global news affect currency prices, making it a highly dynamic and volatile market. Forex trading can be highly profitable but also carries significant risk, so understanding market fundamentals and technical analysis is crucial for success.

Participation in the Markets

Central Banks

Influence the market by adjusting interest rates and monetary peliny, impacting currency value.

Commercial Banks and Financial Institutions

Major Currencies

There are 8 major currencies that are traded on the market. If there's an issue with any of these currencies, it will likely have a high impact on the market.

Types of Currency Pairs

Currency pairs are paired together, and Foreign Exchange (Forex) trading involves two-way trades between two countries.

Major Currency Pairs

Major currency pairs are the most widely traded pairs globally. These include:

  • EUR/USD
  • GBP/USD
  • USD/CHF
  • USD/JPY
  • AUD/USD
  • NZD/USD
  • USD/CAD

Among these 7 major pairs, most transactions typically involve the top four, making them some of the fastest-moving currency pairs available.

Cross Currency Pairs

Cross currency pairs are pairs that do not include the USD. These pairs are not directly linked to the U.S. dollar. Examples include:

  • Euro Crosses: EUR/CHF, EUR/GBP, EUR/AUD
  • Yen Crosses: EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY
  • Pound Crosses: GBP/AUD, GBP/NZD, GBP/CAD

Forex Trading Education

Understand key concepts to enhance your trading experience.

TRADING SESSION

The trading sessions in the forex market vary by country, so it's essential to know the active forex trading sessions to plan your trades effectively.

Generally, the active forex trading hours occur on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST. During active forex hours, currencies are traded worldwide in major financial centers, including Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York.

WHAT IS PIPS?

A pip is the minimum change in price movement and is a standard unit for measuring how much an exchange rate has changed.

Originally, a pip represented the smallest possible price change in forex. However, with more precise pricing methods now available, this initial definition has evolved. Traditionally, forex prices are quoted to four decimal places, and a price change in the fourth decimal place was considered a pip.

PENDING ORDERS

There are four types of pending orders:

  • Buy Limit & Sell Limit: Set at specific zones that we've marked, and the order is placed within the zone wallet for the price to reach it.
  • Buy Stop & Sell Stop: Limit orders are set at specific zones. Buy Stop is set above the current price, and Sell Stop is set below the current price.

BREAK EVEN

Break Even (BE) is a strategy used by swing or intraday traders to avoid losses by setting the Stop Loss above or below the entry price. This way, traders can feel more secure in their trades, knowing that if the price reverses, the position will not incur a loss from the entry price.

TIME FRAMES

There are several time frames you can use in trading:

  • M1 (1 Minute)
  • M5 (5 Minutes)
  • M15 (15 Minutes)
  • M30 (30 Minutes)
  • H1 (1 Hour)
  • H4 (4 Hours)
  • D1 (1 Day)
  • W1 (1 Week)
  • M1 (1 Month)

For example, M1 means the price chart is displayed every 1-minute interval, so each candle on the M1 time frame represents price movement over 1 minute.
